CEFR levels A1-C2 explained
CEFR is the common European scale for language ability, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). It is useful because it tells you what to learn next instead of leaving you to guess. Here is the short version, mapped to vocabulary and verb tenses.
A1 to A2: the foundation
Everyday words and set phrases, the present tense, and a first past and future. Enough to introduce yourself, order food and handle simple, predictable situations. This is the stage where a daily habit matters most.
B1 to B2: independence
You handle most situations while travelling, follow the main points of clear speech and express opinions. Vocabulary broadens into work, news and feelings. Verbs expand into the subjunctive, conditional and compound past tenses.
C1 to C2: fluency and nuance
You understand demanding texts, use the language flexibly for social and professional life, and grasp implicit meaning and idiom. Vocabulary becomes precise and idiomatic, and almost all tenses and moods are in active use.
