The Spanish subjunctive, explained simply
The subjunctive scares learners because it is taught as a wall of endings. But it is not a tense. It is a mood, a way of marking that something is wished-for, doubted, or unreal rather than stated as fact. Once you learn when it fires, the forms follow.
Indicative states facts; subjunctive does not
The indicative reports reality: sé que viene (I know he is coming). The subjunctive appears when reality is filtered through a wish, doubt, emotion or condition: espero que venga (I hope he comes). Notice the split: a main clause of attitude, then que, then a second subject in the subjunctive.
The main triggers (WEIRDO)
A common memory aid is WEIRDO: Wishes (quiero que…), Emotion (me alegro de que…), Impersonal expressions (es importante que…), Recommendations (te sugiero que…), Doubt/denial (no creo que…), Ojalá (“I wish/hopefully”). If your sentence starts with one of these and adds que + a new subject, you are in subjunctive territory.
How to form the present subjunctive
Take the yo form of the present indicative, drop the -o, and add the “opposite” endings: -ar verbs take -e endings, -er/-ir verbs take -a endings. Hablar → hable, hables, hable…; comer → coma, comas, coma… Building from the yo form is why irregular yo forms (like tengo → tenga) carry into the subjunctive.
Two subjects, or no subjunctive
The subjunctive almost always needs a change of subject across que. Quiero salir (I want to leave, same subject, infinitive) but quiero que salgas (I want you to leave, new subject, subjunctive). If both halves share a subject, Spanish usually uses an infinitive instead of the subjunctive.
Learn it by contrast, not by list
Reading the endings once will not make them stick. What works is meeting minimal pairs, like creo que está vs no creo que esté, over and over until the mood switches on its own.
